a female on the chrysanthemum throne?

plans are afoot to change the law of primogeniture in japan, in order to allow little princess aiko, 3, to inherit the throne when the time comes. it seems the japanese government is in favor, as well as some folks in the country. if aiko were allowed to be heiress and if she eventually succeeds her father, the crown prince naruhito, who is heir to the emperor akihito, it will be the first time in over two centuries that japan has had a female head of state.
