another local priest appointed bishop

And yet another local guy has been appointed to the episcopate.

This time a priest from the archdiocese of San Francisco, Randolph Calvo, currently serving as pastor at the parish of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Redwood City, California—-about 30 minutes south from San Francisco—-has been named by Pope Benedict today as the new bishop of Reno in Nevada. He succeeds Phillip Straling who retired recently.

Reno if you don’t already know is about 3 to 4 hours from the San Francisco Bay Area. And I’d consider the town sort of a lesser version of Las Vegas. Ooops....sorry about that if you are from Reno. I was just there to visit this summer for a few days and was quite underwhelmed.

Anyway, just to give you an idea of the scope of Calvo’s new dominion, he takes over a diocese with a population of 607,459, consisting of 91,973 Catholics, with 42 priests and 11 permanent deacons serving them.
